Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) is an action
orientated therapy which focuses on the here and now. The therapist
plays an active role, dealing straight with the problem in a decisive
manner. It is practical and action orientated in its use of homework
assignments, role-playing and other techniques. It is based on the
idea that every individual experiences his "own" reality,
holding his own set of beliefs and attitudes. These can often become
disturbing leading to inappropriate emotions and behaviors, thus leading
to problems.
Albert Ellis founded Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy in 1955.
At present, REBT is being practiced in more than 20 different countries
worldwide. The basic idea of REBT is to help people manage and change
disturbing emotions and behaviors, enhancing personal growth, by
changing disturbing thoughts and increasing problem-solving abilities.
